Welcome

There’s a bit of a behind-the-scenes theme to this issue, because we have a couple of articles exploring what lies behind some of the most popular coastal resort areas. On page 24, Ben Lynch looks at the wonderful mountain ranges and villages that lie behind the Costa Blanca, while on page 40 I pick half a dozen of my favourite just-inland areas, here in the UK and abroad, where you are within easy reach of the sea but will benefit from more space, more scenery and more locals.

What were you doing when you were 24 (assuming, of course, that you’ve reached that venerable age)? I bet you hadn’t bought a house in France, converted it and launched into the holiday letting business, but that’s what Amy Drillsma-Milgrom has done. She explains how and why she acquired her idyllic-looking property in the Gers on page 30.

Closer to home, on page 36 Elisa Arteseo explores the case for combining a country break and your favourite hobby – in this case, South Devon and cooking – while Alison Thomas looks at a great day out in the Lake District (page 18). And Bob Jenkins enjoys a whimsical wander round Salisbury (page 46).

Fancy somewhere a little hotter? Turn a few pages and you’ll see that parts of Lanzarote are scorching, whatever the weather. Solange Hando enjoyed seeing the volcanic sights there – and also a camel ride (page 10).

If you’re a holiday property owner – or just thinking about it – we have an interesting case study on how not to spoil historic buildings (page 52). And have you ever worried about people copying your keys? If so, you’ll be interested in page 16.

If you’re wondering if you can rely on air travel this year, I’ve been looking at the ferry alternative and trying three widely different cars that could, in their different ways, be ideal for a long trip (page 55). Plus all our usual features and what you’re probably reading the magazine for: a wonderful selection of holiday properties throughout the world.
